Human Powered Ice Vehicle 2002 World Championships
We had an absolutely beautiful day with temps in the mid 40s. Ice conditions were very good, with most riders 3-5 mph faster than last year.
A record turnout of 23 competitors from 5 states, including Ray Brick from South Carolina ans Mark Fisher from Kansas.
A New World Record was set in the 100 meter sprints. Sean Costin, one of the world's fastest HPV racers, went 32.279 mph on a bike built by the fastest, Sam "81 mph!" Whittingham. To put this speed in perspective, Sean ran 39.8 mph on dry pavement at the 1999 World HPV Championships, beating the best of the Europeans by 1.25 mph.
